Keeping Healthy Breasts
It is important that you complete regular breast care in order to avoid complications. Here are some suggestions about breast care:
-
Wash hands before feeds
-
Avoid lotions, oils, or non-medicinal ointments on breasts
-
Hand- express a little milk after feeds and apply to the nipples; let air dry
-
Wear comfortable bras – beware that underwire models or straps that are too tight may cause blocked breast ducts; a good estimate is to buy a bra two sizes larger than you would normally wear
-
Use cotton liners in your bra and change them frequently to discourage the growth of bacteria and yeast

Cotton bra liners.
These are the steps to hand-expression of breastmilk. Letting hand-expressed breastmilk dry on your nipples can help promote healing.
Pictured above is a breastfeeding bra. Notice that it contains no underwire, which is important to prevent the blocking of milk ducts.
